MTH stands for Mike's Train House; a company established and owned my Mike Wolf. Even before its establishment in 1980, Mike was already in the business by independently assembling Lionel model trains at his home. By the time he formally established his company, he already has a good reputation especially in mail order model trains.

The MTH Trains were first produced in the 1893 as a reproduction of Lionel Model but eventually produced model trains with their own brands. In 1987 the company again started its operations as a Lionel reproducer which again ended in 1993. When that relationship ended, MTH started their line of products. In 1998, sales of MTH became highly competitive that it has rivaled Lionel. Due to their presence in the market especially in creating replicas and a new type of control system, prices on model trains dropped and innovations were introduced to the model scale industry even in model scale licensing.

The MTH O Scale Model Trains are known for sporting a unique electronic control system. The Digital Command System Command Control or DCC is a non-licensed type of electronic control system. MTH O Scale Model Trains are also licensed to create models of NYC Subway Cars and Union Pacific Trains.
